Architecture by Hiroki Matsuura (a world-renowned architect, the author of the project concept) always begins with a bright image. This is equally true for the project developed to the order of the Metinvest holding. The new educational building of Ukraine's first non-state technical university should become a physical embodiment of modern approaches to education and, at the same time, a landmark architectural object.
The architectural project intends to demonstrate the aesthetic benefits of raw steel by using powerful I-beams for the building's frame. This will allow future metallurgists to focus on the elegance and advantages of the material, similar to how Thomas Heatherwick gave impetus to steel construction with his Vessel sculpture in New York (by the way, Vessel structures are cast from Ukrainian steel).
The structural advantages of this approach are that the transfer of the load to the transverse beams will allow to obtain large spaces that are easily replanned without vertical columns. The supporting structure will be open to views both from the inside and from the outside. At the same time, each element will be thermally insulated, which will avoid cold bridges, and the surface of the steel beams is protected by a transparent nanocoating.
The hierarchy of the spaces of the future Metinvest Polytechnic building is built depending on their user demand from the bottom up. A similar logic was previously proposed by Hirok Matsuura in a competition for Aalto University in Helsinki. All open and flexible spaces that ensure the fusion of educational and scientific processes with communications and communication are located on the first and second levels. These are two conference rooms and a spacious hall, the open layout of which provides many options for use.
Educational classrooms - from a lecture hall for 100 people to a room for diploma preparation for 12 seats and architectural workshops - occupy the 3rd to 8th floors. Laboratories will be located here, without which the existence of a technical university is impossible. As reported by Metinvest, memorandums on the equipment of the laboratory base have already been concluded with the international corporations Siemens, Schneider Electric, Honeywell Ukraine and Festo.
Confidential and administrative spaces are located on the upper levels of the building - the rectorate and the meeting hall of the educational council occupy the 9-10 floors, and above them are the library and "quiet" reading rooms.
In addition to program blocks, the project provides a large number of spaces for informal communication. Exits to green roofs with terraces are planned from the third floor. Another terrace with cafe tables is located on the cantilever of the 11th floor. And the summer playground along the southern part of the building will be in demand both by residents of the university and by visitors to the public park. Thanks to the absence of visual barriers, passers-by will be able to observe the dynamic university life.
More than 150 people are involved in the construction site of the "Metinvest Polytechnic" university campus. Specialists are already completing the most difficult stage of the construction of the "zero cycle" - the part of the building that is below the floor of the first floor has been erected, and the first steel structures have been installed.
At the time of the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, the installation of reinforced concrete structures was actively carried out, they managed to build 4 floors and floor slabs (reinforced concrete). Preparations for the installation of the glass facade were also started.
The peculiarity of this project was the presence of two Tender Committees - the Developer's and the Customer's. This is a complex structure, but it allowed to reach more potential participants and reduce the price by 5% to 12% from the first commercial offers.
